The destination

About Hever Castle

Hever Castle began as a gatehouse and a walled bailey in 1383, and Geoffrey Boleyn bought it in 1462. His great-granddaughter Anne grew up here, and Anne of Cleves held it after her. By 1903 it was close to ruin, and William Waldorf Astor spent five years, 748 men and a further 800 digging a lake putting it back. We bring together the Hever Castle tours and tickets that get you out there and home again inside a day.

Inside the castle

Three floors and about seventeen rooms, walked in a fixed order because a single spiral stair is the only way up. The route ends where it began, in the 1383 gatehouse, which still holds two of its three portcullises and a fourteenth-century garderobe over the moat. Anne Boleyn's own Books of Hours are on display, and the Long Gallery hangs 24 portraits in dynastic order.

Planning the day

The grounds open at half past ten and the castle at noon, which sounds like a detail and decides everything. Allow at least an hour inside and an hour and a half in the gardens, and the maze shuts three quarters of an hour before the grounds do. Booking admission online costs less than paying at the gate.

Six hundred years of owners

Thirty-six owners from twelve families have held Hever since 1383: the Cobhams, the Boleyns, Anne of Cleves, the Waldegraves, the Waldos and the Meade Waldos, then an American who bought it in 1903 and spent a fortune on it. It opened to the public in 1963 and was sold to its present owner in 1983.

Five things worth settling before you book

Two tickets, and the difference is the building itself. Castle & Gardens is £25.50 online for an adult; Gardens Only is £19.95. Both cost about £2.90 more if you pay at the gate, and one fare here has the ticket inside it already.

Hours, tickets and the full price table

Thirty miles from central London, and the last three are the ones that decide it. There is no bus. Edenbridge Town station needs a taxi you have booked in advance; Hever station is unmanned and a mile's walk from the gate.

Every way in, by time and by effort

The estate asks for an hour inside the castle and an hour and a half in the gardens, and the mazes want half an hour more. Anything under four hours on the site means choosing between the rooms and the grounds.

Which kind of Hever day suits you

The season runs 11 February to 19 November, and then Christmas takes over until 2 January. Autumn Colour runs from late September; the roses are a June and July thing; the gardens close entirely in the new year.

How a day at the castle actually goes

  1. Collected in London

    Most days start between nine and ten at your own hotel or address, with your driver waiting outside rather than at a coach stop.

  2. An hour or so of Kent

    Thirty miles down the M23 or the A21 and into the lanes around Edenbridge. They are narrow enough that your last mile takes longer than it looks.

  3. The gardens first

    The grounds open at half past ten and the castle at noon, so you start with the Italian Garden, the lake and the mazes whether you meant to or not.

  4. Then the rooms

    An hour inside is the estate's own recommendation. You go up thirteen spiral steps to the middle floor and sixteen more to the top, and come out in the gatehouse you walked through on the way in.

Where to buy

Do you need a guided tour at all?

Sometimes the honest answer is no, and this is what each route actually costs.

Driving yourself

Free once you have a car. Hever is thirty miles from central London off the B2026, signposted from the M25 and the M23, and you pay nothing to park. If you already have a car and you are happy with a country lane at the end of it, this is the cheapest way you will get there and nobody should sell you anything else.

Train to Edenbridge Town, then a taxi

Victoria or London Bridge to Edenbridge Town, then three miles by cab. Book your taxi for both legs in advance, which is the part people forget: it is a small town, and your return fare will not be waiting outside the station at half past four.

Train to Hever, then walk

One stop further on the same line, then a one-mile walk waymarked with red and white posts. Hever station is unmanned and has no taxi rank, so it is a lovely arrival in June and a decision you have to mean in November.

A private car for the day

From $411 for the car rather than the seat. It takes the return timetable, the taxi booking and the walk off your list, and because the fare buys the vehicle your party of four splits one price. That is the arithmetic that decides whether it is expensive for you or not.

How long do you need at the castle?

Is Hever Castle worth visiting?
If Tudor history or gardens are the reason you are travelling, yes: this is where Anne Boleyn grew up, and the 125 acres around the house were laid out by Joseph Cheal and Son between 1904 and 1908. If you want a fortress rather than a family home, Hever is smaller than its photographs suggest and it is worth knowing that before you set off.
Do the tours include the entrance ticket?
One of them does, and the rest do not. Each card says which, because the difference is roughly the price of two adult tickets on a day out. Where entry is excluded, buy it on the castle's own site before you travel and you pay less than at the gate.
Is parking free?
Yes, parking is free, with accessible spaces. There is more than one car park and staff direct you to whichever is open that day, so a group arriving in two cars cannot be guaranteed the same one. Car parks close fifteen minutes after the last exit from the grounds.
Is the castle wheelchair accessible?
The grounds largely are, on hard-surfaced and shingle paths, and wheelchair hire is available. The castle is a different matter: the ground floor is the only level a wheelchair reaches, and motorised chairs and scooters cannot come into the Courtyard or the building at all. A carer accompanying a disabled visitor is admitted free.
Can you take dogs into the grounds?
Dogs are welcome across the grounds on a lead, the rowing boats included, but not in the castle, the cafes, the shops, the mazes, the play areas or the Festival Theatre. There are water bowls at the Moat Cafe and the Guthrie Pavilion, and a stand in the Castle Courtyard where a dog can be tied while you go inside, though it is not supervised. Registered assistance dogs are welcome everywhere, the castle included.
Was Anne Boleyn actually born at Hever Castle?
She grew up here rather than was born here, and the castle is careful about the distinction. The room presented as the Nursery is where the Boleyn children most likely slept; the long-standing story that it was Anne's own bedroom dates from the seventeenth century and is a myth the estate names as one.
What is the difference between the Castle & Gardens and Gardens Only tickets?
Gardens Only buys you everything outside the moat: 125 acres of gardens, both mazes, the Miniature Model Houses, the Military Museum and the play areas. Castle & Gardens adds the building itself, three floors of it, with the audio guide included. The gap is about five and a half pounds for an adult booking online.
Are these tours refundable?
Most of them refund in full if you cancel at least twenty-four hours before the start time. Two are sold non-refundable, with no change and no refund once confirmed, and both say so beside their own price. Check that line before you book if your dates might move.
Is the castle owned by the National Trust or English Heritage?
Neither. Hever Castle is privately owned. It is not a National Trust property and it is not English Heritage. Membership of those organisations gets you nothing here, although the estate does run partner offers with the RHS, Historic Houses, Gardeners' World, the Armed Forces and Tesco.
What is the best time of year to visit?
June and July for the Rose Garden, which holds over 5,000 rose bushes, and late September to the start of November for Autumn Colour and the Dahlia Border. February and March are the quietest months of the open season and the shortest days of it. Christmas is its own event, running 20 November to 2 January on its own ticket.

Getting there

30 miles from central London, off the B2026 between Sevenoaks and East Grinstead. Edenbridge Town station is three miles away and needs a taxi booked in advance; Hever station is a waymarked mile on foot. Getting there has all four routes with times.

Opening hours

Grounds from 10.30am and the castle from noon, 11 February to 19 November. Last entry and last exit move three times a season, and Christmas runs on its own ticket from 20 November.
